    As part of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) brings together expert advice, analysis and evidence with policy development and implementation to shape and drive health improvement and equalities priorities for government. The focus is towards preventing ill health, in particular in the places and communities where there are the most significant disparities.

    This section will include information on OHID policy and resources as we build the page. For now, it includes:

    Local Stop Smoking Services and support: commissioning, delivery and monitoring guidance

    This document provides clear steps for commissioning, delivering and monitoring effective, evidence-based stop smoking support. This guidance, which replaces the previous document published in 2014, includes evidence updates and current developments in best practice.

    This document will undergo a formal annual review and be edited as new policy, research and clinical guidance developments emerge.

    Annual review due: 26.3.25. Date of last substantive review: 16.3.24

    Minor review 2.4.24: updated proportion of people who smoke and die because of their smoking (two in three rather than three in four) and cost of smoking (both on page 12), replaced consumption graph with prevalence data (page 13), updated reference 10 (page 46) to 2023, and referred to 'people who smoke' rather than 'smoker' (throughout where possible).

    Maximising the impact of stop smoking services: latest evidence and best practice

    COMING SOON! Informed by the Local Stop Smoking Services and support: commissioning, delivery and monitoring guidance and a review of evidence and best practice, this briefing aims to assist with planning and delivery to maximise the reach and impact of Local Stop Smoking Services.

    The guidance is founded upon four principles that underpin all service development and delivery:

    1. Appropriately funded services backed by local intelligence
    2. Client led and client focused
    3. Targeted and tailored approaches to service delivery
    4. Work in partnership and collaborate across systems
